What is an X-ray used for?
X-rays are a common lab imaging test that helps your doctor view the inside of your body without having to make an incision. This can help them diagnose, monitor, and treat many medical conditions.
There are different types of x-rays that are used for different purposes, your doctor may order an x-ray to:
- Examine the area where you are experiencing pain or discomfort
- Monitor the progression of a diagnosed disease, such as osteoporosis
- Check if a prescribed treatment is working
Some conditions that may require an x-ray include:
- Bone cancer
- Breast tumors
- Enlarged heart
- Blocked blood vessels
- Any conditions affecting your lungs
- Digestive issues
- Tooth decay
- To retrieve a swallowed item
How does x-rays work?
X-rays have a beam that passes through the body, and is absorbed in different amounts depending on the density of the materials they pass through. Dense materials include bone and metal which will show up as white on x-rays. The air in your lungs show up black and fat or muscle appears as a shade of gray.
X-rays are largely performed at doctor’s offices, emergency rooms or hospitals, wherever an x-ray is available and needed. The x-ray machine produces a safe level of radiation that will pass through your body to record images of a specialized plate. You cannot feel the x-ray when this procedure is being done.
A tech will position your body appropriately to obtain the necessary views they need. They may offer pillows or sandbags to help you hold a certain position. During the x-ray exposure, you need to remain still and sometimes hold your breath to avoid moving so the image does not come out blurred.
An x-ray procedure can take upwards of a few minutes to complete or longer depending on how simple or involved the procedure is.
How do I know if I need an X-Ray?
X-rays are completed to view injuries and are best considered by doctors to request on a case-by-case basis. Certain injuries like torn tendons, hyperextensions, will not show up on an x-ray. There are a few indicators that may suggest you need an x-ray which are:
- Inability to walk (twisted or broken ankle)
- Joint immobility
- Pain directly around the bone
- Swelling that will not decrease with treatment
