For women, finding a certified and trusted gynecologist near you is important for your overall health and well-being. Receiving dependable gynecological care ensures you can stay healthy in every stage of your life. At Elite Health Center & Family Care, we are proud to offer the highest quality gynecologic care to women in Lakeland, FL and the surrounding area.
What is a gynecologist?
A gynecologist is a specialized doctor who concentrates in reproductive health. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends women 13 years and older see a gynecologist every year. For younger women, a full pelvic exam may not be necessary, as these are not typically required until a woman turns 21. However, it is important for younger women to visit a gynecologist for other reasons, including building a trusting relationship that can help ensure they receive the best gynecologic care throughout their life.
At Elite Health Center & Family Care, we strive to create a comforting atmosphere that reduces the stress many women feel surrounding their annual trip to the gynecologist. We prioritize open and honest communication and work hard to build trusting relationships, so you can feel comfortable talking about intimate issues regarding your health. Every member of our staff takes the trust you place in us seriously. We understand the importance of removing stigma so that embarrassment or discomfort never stop you from receiving vital medical care.
What services are provided by a gynecologist?
Your annual visit to your gynecologist will include a breast exam, a pelvic exam, and a pap smear. Each part of your annual exam is meant to help identify potential health problems before they become more serious. Early detection for diseases including breast cancer and cervical dysplasia can have a large impact on the efficacy and availability of treatment. That is why Elite Health Center & Family Care is so committed to providing these necessary medical services to women in the Lakeland area.
What are Breast Exams for?
The breast exam portion of your appointment includes visual inspection of your breasts. Your gynecologist will look for signs of shrinking, bulging, discoloration, and other abnormalities. A physical breast exam including palpation of each breast, and a closer examination of your underarm area for any lumps will also be performed by your gynecologist. During this part of your check-up, your gynecologist can also guide you through the steps of performing self-breast exams if you are unsure of how to do one.
What is a Pap Smear?
The pelvic exam part of your office visit will include inspection of your exterior genitalia, a bimanual exam, and a speculum exam. Depending on your age, you may also undergo a pap smear. A pap smear takes a small sample of cells from your cervix and uterine fornix and tests them for potential abnormalities, including human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer. At Elite Health Center & Gynecology, we also recommend STI testing for women who have not had testing before, or who have recently become involved with a new sexual partner.
